Lott On Iraq: ‘Why Do Sunnis Kill Shiites? … They All Look The Same To Me’
Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS),
who famously suggested the U.S. wouldn’t have “all these
problems” had Strom Thurmond been elected President, said today that the
religious differences among Iraqis makes the conflict very
difficult for him to understand:
“It’s hard for Americans, all of us, including me, to understand what’s wrong with these people,” he said. “Why do they kill people of other religions because of religion? Why do they hate the Israeli’s and despise their right to exist? Why do they hate each other? Why do Sunnis kill Shiites? How do they tell the difference? They all look the same to me.“
Speaking shortly after a meeting with President Bush and Vice President Cheney, Lott added that Iraq wasn’t among the White House’s priorities.
“No, none of that,” Lott told reporters after the session when asked if the Iraq war was discussed. “You’re [the media] the only ones who obsess on that. We don’t and the real people out in the real world don’t for the most part.“

Lott’s comments about physical resemblance aside, his assertion that Iraq is a trivial matter only “obessed” on by the media is about as arrogant as Bush’s remark about the Iraq war as a comma in history. Maybe he should go face to face with a parent who’s lost a son or daughter in Iraq and say the same thing. It would be a nice photo-op too–for an enraged parent to spit in Lott’s face.

Lott’s statement is deliberate, not an accident in any way. This is straight from the Republicans’ playbook. If the facts don’t agree with you, switch the subject. The National Intelligence Estimate is hurting the Republicans, so they are downplaying its importance by saying Iraq is not important.
Look at what O’Reilly is saying (from the Huffington Report): O’Reilly on Iraq: I “[c]ouldn’t care less about the country”.
When two Republicans say the same new thing, it is their talking point.

The comment about Israel, I think, goes right to the heart of why so many Americans don’t understand what is going on over there. It sounds like Lott has swallowed the grand Israeli mythology completely. The reality is that the founding of Israel was one of the last vestiges of European colonialism and indigenous people were massacred and exiled to make way for the european immigration. If one doesn’t understand this, it is easy to see the Palestinain/Israeli conflict as just a band of crazed relgious fanatics attempting to kill the noble Israelis.

Trent Lott’s foot perpetually stays in his mouth. But seriously, we hear of Sunni-on-Shiite violence and vice versa all the time. How do the Sunni’s recognize the Shiites and vice versa out amongst the general public? I have never heard an answer to this. If someone knows, please enlighten me. Are there subtle differences in the clothing and headdress that would indicate to which branch of Islam one belongs? Or, are these killings taking place in or near the groups’ respective mosques, or in neighborhoods heavily populated by one group or the other, where it is assumed that people out on the street belong to the targeted group?
On the other topic - I’m sure the families of all the American men and women who have died fighting in Iraq will be comforted to hear that Iraq isn’t one of Bush’s or Lott’s priorities. If they think that by asking the hard questions, the press is “obsessed” with Iraq, then it shows just how out of touch with average Americans they are.

Apologies for being unnecessarily harsh, but I believe that such questions actually play into the misinformation campaign. Such questions, actually, could be asked of any conflict. Looking down from Mars, would not all humans look alike? They all have the same physical features, really.

I was in Talkeetna, Alaska one day in the early 1980’s and stopped at the local roadhouse for a beer. A sign near the door said, “Hippies use side door,” with an arrow. There was no side door. Hippies weren’t welcome as the area or the roadhouse, even though there was a sizeable summer population who lived in cardboard shacks and canvas lean-tos along the railroad tracks and just off the highway.
Inside were all these long-haired, grubby looking locals, mostly miners, mountain guides, or construction workers, wearing well-worn shirts, old ball caps, and faded jeans, many with holes in them. I asked the female bartender about the sign, was told about the hatred the locals had for “hippies” and how they were rousted whenever they came around.
I looked around and asked quietly so as not to be overheard, “But how can you tell which ones were the hippies?” and mentioned that they all looked alike to me.
She smiled and in so many words said, “You don’t need to be able to the difference. Its enough that we do.”

The Shi’a/Sunni sectarian violence in Iraq is not exclusively sectarian. It is just that the Shi’as are cooperating with the Americans since they know they’re going to end up with majority control if Iraq stabilizes, which is unacceptable to the Iraqi resistance, comprised mainly of Sunnis.

I’m no fan of Lott’s but he was not saying that physical similarities make it impossible to distinguish individual Iraqis from one another. That is, he was not saying “all Iraqis look the same.” I don’t view his meaning as offensive. Iraqis do indeed look like Iraqis to me.

I also don’t really understand the incredibly violent sectarian problems in Iraq. How can two branches of the same religion kill each other. Some “religion of peace”.

About a month ago I contributed $40 to Lott’s Democratic opponent in Mississippi. While the race was still listed as safe Republican I saw a quality candidate running against him — part of Howard Dean’s 50 State strategy.
An out of touch Lott could turn this race around much like the Macaca comment by Allen turned the Virginia race around. Now, how sweet would that be.
I encourage Thinkprogress to take a hard look at this race.

They really do have their own colors. Shia fly black and green banners above their houses and mosques and sunnis fly all white banners. For instance the Shia Al Mahdi Militia of cleric Muqtada al Sadr during the uprising in 2004 used to wear all black suits with a green band around their arm which was used to be shoot on sight criteria because they were considered part of a hostile army. I’m not trying to take sides or put anybody down, but there is truth to Trent Lotts statement. Sunnis and Shiites have been waging war against each other for a while. It’s got something to do with their beliefs and the way they pray. One group believes that prophet Mohammed was the last and greatest prophet and no one else after him, while the other still looks up to the prophet’s descendents as their spiritual leaders. I’m not Muslim or Arab. I was born in Kuwait and lived there for 20 yrs. I was born catholic and I always got into fights with the locals because I was Christian. They would draw a cross in the sand, spit & stomp on it, and then shove my brother and me. Me and my brother would retaliate (We never did tell our parents why we got in to fights.) So I have no pity for the Muslims. I’m an immigrant here and love this country. I do come across a lot of Muslims and they feel that America deserved 9/11, and other terrorists attack. Those very people would empathize with the Americans, and then turn around and say shit against this country. I think that this country gives them too much respect and freedom. The Arabs and Pakistanis make it nearly impossible to build churches or temples in their countries. But they inundate the rest of the world with mosques. There was even an attempt by a cleric who wanted the British govt. to adopt sharia (quran) laws for all to follow. They don’t allow us to follow our beliefs there but try and enforce theirs on us. That’s just wrong and although I’m against dubya and every issue he supports, I support any action he takes against them. The Americans may be using it as a way to keep them occupied. Look at all the countries terrorized by them - America, most of Western Europe (France, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Britain, Italy), India, China, Russia, Somalia, Nigeria, Sudan, Kenya, Philippines, Indonesia, Israel, Lebanon, and Egypt. Lets not forget the rest of the Arab world. I avoid judging people, but before you sympathies with Arabs, live with them, find out how many people were killed by them. In the northern state of India - Kashmir - 64,000 people were killed.

The major split in Islam is that between the majority Sunnis (Saudi), and the minority Shiites(Iran, Hesbola). The split goes back to events in the 7th century:
